In 2011-12, about 15% of Flemish primary school pupils and 8% of Flemish secondary school pupils had parents with a native language other than Dutch. In Antwerp, this percentage reaches 40%. For this reason, a compulsory Dutch language test has been introduced this school year for all pupils starting primary or secondary school in Flanders or in Brussels’ Dutch language schools. This test is not intended as an admission test but as a way of identifying the children who need additional support.
