Stricter language requirements for Dutch-speaking schools in Brussels

From 2016-2017 onwards, Brussels’ parents will have to prove that they speak Dutch on a higher language level, B2 instead of B1, in order to qualify for the priority rules for Dutch-speaking secondary schools in Brussels. Next school year is considered to be a transition year in which the parents get the time to achieve the required B2 level. Opposition party Groen rejects this language requirement as ’kafkaeque’ and proposes an alternative in which children in Dutch-speaking schools in Brussels are automatically considered as Dutch children, without a language test for their foreign parents.
