For the third time, the VUB conducted an in-depth survey focused on the linguistic competence and behaviour of the Brussels population. Conducted every five years, the taalbarometers provide some of the most reliable information about changes in the composition of the Brussels population. Among many other striking facts, the third taalbarometer documents a fast growth in the proportion of the Brussels households in which more than one language is spoken. It also shows that the proportion of Brusselers competent in Dutch, French and English has shrunk relative to five years earlier, while reported competence in Arabic is on the rise.
The main results are presented in Rudi JANSSENS, Meertaligheid als cement van de stedelijke samenleving. Een analyse van de Brusselse taalsituatie op basis van taalbarometer 3, VUB Press, 2013, which can be ordered here.
